Quick guide to the Lory Student Center 50th Celebration

Hey Rams!  Happy Friday!

As I’ve mentioned before, this year marks the 50th anniversary (cheering and clapping ensues in the background) of the Lory Student Center! As a way to commemorate and celebrate the building, LSC staff members have worked hard to coordinate and plan events for students, staff, faculty, alumni, and community members.

The theme of upcoming events reflects an effort to bring Lory Student Center history to the forefront.  Week one will feature the 60s and 70s, week 2 the 80s and 90s, and week three will celebrate the 2000s.  By the end of the celebration, though, nostalgia will shift to excitement as the Student Center prepares for its revitalization project to take place in Spring 2013.

While the LSC always hosts great events, the coming weeks feature once-in-a-lifetime opportunities.  Don’t miss out!

Here are some highlights:

  • September 13:  The annual President’s Fall Address and Picnic on the Oval will have a special atmosphere as Tony Frank gives thanks to those who have been with the LSC throughout the last 50 years; come and enjoy a LSC 50th dessert (yum!).
  • September 15:  ASAP presents Top 40 bands Cobra Starship and Breathe Carolina (they’re from Denver, remember?) at this year’s RamJam.  Hosted in the IM Field, tickets are still available and only $10 for students! Doors open at 5 p.m.; the concert starts at 6:30 p.m.
  • September 17, 19, 24, 26, and October 3:  Travel through 50 years of pop culture with five decade-defining films in the newly renovated Lory Student Center Theatre.  Movies will include To Kill A Mockingbird, Grease, Back to the Future, Toy Story, and Men in Black III (these are the chances I was talking about to grab a glimpse of the updated theatre!)
  • September 19, 26, and October 3:  On these dates, ASAP is going to have a few special individuals roaming the LSC and plaza doing all kinds of nifty tricks.  I like surprises, so I’m going to a leave a little mystery in what exactly to expect.  Think “awesome entertainment” and you should get close.
  • September 26:  A couple of months ago, I watched LSC staff dig up a time capsule that was buried in 1987. On this day, the video of the grueling dig will be shown on the plaza and some of the items found inside will be featured. It will be like taking a trip back to the 1980s!
  • October 5:  This year’s annual Homecoming Parade will have special flare.  Not only will you see a float featuring members of the “LSC 7” – a group of student leaders from the 1960s – you can also see the “New Faces of the LSC,” which is a group of students chosen for their leadership and devotion to the Lory Student Center and Colorado State University.  (learn more about the “LSC 7” here:  http://www.sc.colostate.edu/lsc-history.aspx)
  • October 5:  All these events will culminate in the 50th Anniversary Party.  Beginning at 6 p.m. in the Lory Student Center Main Ballroom, the celebration will feature fireworks, special announcements, unveilings, and other festive happenings.  Food and beverages will be provided.  Come share your fond memories of the LSC!

I know that was a lot of information at one time, so don’t feel pressured to remember it all.  I will be reviewing most of these events in the coming weeks, so you will always be in the know.

‘til next time!

Yours,
Allison
