The year 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of the Lory Student Center at Colorado State University. Johnson Hall served as the first "student center" for nearly 23 years, and together, both have been a home for thousands of students, faculty, staff and alumni, as well as the greater Fort Collins community.
We have always been, and always will be, a place that builds community among our members. We have held fast to our belief that students are the best ones to lead this community building effort, seeking the guidance of our predominantly student-run LSC Governing Board, and employing nearly 500 student staff annually in providing services and exciting programs for our campus.
Just as significant is the Student Center’s role in the University's educational mission through the learning that occurs while programs are planned and presented, in the services that are offered in meeting our financial obligations as a student fee funded and self-supporting auxiliary unit, and in the coming together of diverse peoples, cultures, disciplines and perspectives. Creating a place for this to happen in 1962 and supporting it philosophically and financially with student leadership was truly remarkable. The fact that we take it for granted today speaks volumes of the Student Center’s success over the years, and we have students to thank for that.
The Lory Student Center is on the brink of much needed renovations that will upgrade the Center to better meet the needs of the twenty-first century. This website describes the major changes that are needed, beginning with renovation of the interior of the LSC Theatre this summer. We’ll also be presenting to the Student Fee Review Board in April a request to fund one of four "choices" that are in line with our 20-year master plan. Given the economic times, we recognize that this isn’t an easy decision for students to make. However, as we plan for the future, it is important that we reflect on the history and the legendary actions students of the past made in developing the nationally recognized Student Center that we have today.
We're inviting the campus community to participate in this process by reviewing the materials in our presentations and online, staying involved through our website, inviting us to various organizational meetings, and providing us with your feedback. We want to hear from you! Best wishes for the Spring Semester 2011. We hope to see you around the Lory Student Center!
