Registration Process
Overview
Colorado State University maintains a policy to enable interested persons to form and join organizations to promote common interests. Student organizations form for specific educational, professional, social, recreational or other purposes which derive the majority of their membership and all of their leadership from the student body. The University recognizes student organizations in order to provide services, resources, and facilities; to effectively and equitably allocate University resources; and to assist in the coordination of activities. Organizations not recognized and registered each year are limited in their access to University services and resources.
Three steps are involved in registering a student organization and must be completed on an ANNUAL basis:
Submit completed registration form to the Student Organizations’ Registration Coordinator in SLiCE.
Please complete the form electronically, print it, and then sign where necessary.
- Be sure to have the advisor complete the “Advisor Agreement” portion.
- All executive positions must be held by Colorado State University students.
- Each executive position must be held by a different person.
- All officers’ names are a matter of public record at CSU. Please be advised that we do give out names, addresses, telephone numbers, and email addresses when requested. This information is not sold or otherwise provided to any for-profit organizations.
Step 2: Attend an Officer Orientation
Two officers must attend an officer’s orientation session, one of whom MUST be the treasurer (this does not apply to Sport Clubs who have their own Recreation Center orientation).
- All orientation sessions begin at 4:00 pm
- The 2007-08 orientation dates are as follows:
- Thursday, September 6, Lory Student Center (LSC) Main Ballroom
- Monday, September 10, LSC North Ballroom
- Tuesday, September 18, LSC 228
- Wednesday, September 26 Durrell Center (Residence Halls groups only)
- Wednesday, October 10, LSC 228
- Tuesday, October 23, LSC 228
- Monday, February 4, LSC 228
- Tuesday, February 19, LSC 228
- Monday, March 3, LSC 228
Step 3: Submit a Constitution
The organization’s constitution should be reviewed annually and updated as needed. If any changes are made, the updated constitution must be submitted to the SLiCE Office. SLiCE will maintain a copy of each student organization's constitution. You may request a copy of the current constitution on file for your review.
For new groups, complete a Constitution and turn it into the SLiCE office for approval.
A model constitution is available online to assist you. Items listed in bold are CSU requirements for recognition.
Minimum Standards for Recognition
Student organizations desiring official University recognition must meet the following minimum standards:
- Have a clearly stated lawful purpose, which must be part of a constitution.
- If affiliated with a national organization, must include a letter of affiliation with the constitution. The affiliate may not be a for-profit entity.
- Have a minimum of four Colorado State University student members
- The majority of the members must be Colorado State University students.
- Each organization must have an advisor who is a full-time or part-time Faculty, Administrative Professional or State Classified staff member. Graduate students will be allowed to serve as organizational advisors with consent from their academic advisor.
- Have an adequate and approved system of accounting for organizational funds.
- Comply with University policies and regulations pertaining to student organizations.
Eligibility Requirements to be an Officer
The basic requirements to be an officer in a registered student organization are as follows:
- Be a fee paying, fully matriculated student at Colorado State University.
- The student must maintain a cumulative GPA of a 2.25 or greater at the time of elections and while holding that office. If the student officer falls below a 2.25 GPA during their term of office, a one semester probationary period will be established before the student will be asked to step down from their position.
Recognition of organizations does not imply that the University supports or adheres to the views or positions taken by organizations. Responsibility for any action which violates federal, state or local laws, or University regulations, must be assumed by the individual groups and their officers and members.
